Public Service Announcement UPDATED
To percussionist Mr Steven Wassmansdorf, apologies for calling you a ***** in Ma Vlast blog, thinking it was just a bloody light banter. These things happened because there isn't a Editor around to check and censure my writings to approval.

Good evening, Yoong Wai.
Azrai here; we met while waiting for Monsieur Hamelin's autograph - I was the one with the Brahms score. :)
I am quite disheartened to read what happened to you - in this day and age, and above all in THIS country, these things can happen. Very sad. Personally, I am always puzzled by musicians who say that they can take criticism, then promptly proceed to be rude about it.
I used to write classical music reviews (among other things) for The Malay Mail from 2002-2007 - so, for a given point in time, I was the most dreaded reviewer in KL music circles! ;) And of course, I did what you do - give praise when it was due, and called a spade a spade when necessary. The MPO/DFP were not very happy - surprise!! :D
There was even a point that I got hate mail (well, hate e-mail) for one of my reviews. Rather than despair, I took heart that my words actually moved people enough to reply, no matter that it was not a positive reaction.
In a way, I see myself at the start in your reviews - although you are definitely more entertaining to read than my dry comments (this old fart's way of saying he's boring). I wish you all the best in your future reviews - be strong, be brave, and above all be true. :)
Your friend in musical appreciation, Azrai
p/s - if you have not gotten Monsieur Hamelin's Live In Wigmore Hall CD, I heartily recommend it. The first piece he played was the Alkan transcription of Beethoven's 1st mvt from the PC 3 - stunning! I spoke to him about it that day - we had a good laugh. :)
Hey I had some deja vu when I met you! I actually enjoed your reviews in Malay Mail!
My reviews and yours are tame compared to the nasty ones that American reviewers write, especially in classicstoday.com. If the elite top 5 in U.S like CSO, Cleveland can endure these attacks on weekly basis I can't see why I MPO Principal from the same state can't do it!
Don't worry you will continue to read my reviews on this blog!
P/S: Yes a lot of people recommended that Wigmore Recital cd. Definitely is on my Must-Buy List.
well maybe the American reviewers are actually qualified to write such reviews? i'm sure there's a difference in the professionalism of the writing as well.

Hello Azrai I didn't get to read all your comment but my apologies for deleting you comment because posting your H/P on cyberspace is as suicidal as jaywalking on a PLUS highway with cars zooming about 110 km/h. Hope you understand. But I did jot down that number.
OK; you should have deleted that bit then - the comment for Mr Food For Thought could have been left in. ;)
That's the thing about concert critiques nowadays, in this era of CDs and DVDs you guys are comparing all this edited music with live performances. It is total bullcrap...
A live performance should never be compared to a CD where u can edit phrase by phrase, or even better yet, note by note
I say the above because i noticed this quite a lot these days, even among my friends, bitching about who and who, so and so...playing like crap during live performance, so cannot compare someone else's recording....blah!
Corgan, its probably a free world and u can comment all you want. it is indeed your perspective. but as it was reiterated in comments on your previous posts, DO get your facts CORRECT before u go on babling.
p/s: it only makes u sound stupid when u comment on stuff u r not even sure of. if you are not even familiar with the structure of the piece, janganlah comment like a pro :) stick to "the piece makes me feel happy/sad"
cheers,
alphie
Yoong Wai...? No wonder your style of writing was so familiar to me. Lol.
